The issue doesn't occur if you have Bluetooth switched off on the phone and connect Carplay solely via USB. This is the solution - Unpair the phone from the car by going into Settings>Bluetooth (on the phone). Find the Skoda BT connection and touch the i icon. Then tap Forget This Device.

Thanks for comments, car has the latest small antenna, think antenna must be working as i said it works with other higher speck phones,funny though my older samsung e2550 fone connected ok but had to accept files on fone every time I started car,got grandson to try everything with fone settings as i,am a bit of an idiot ( not up to date) please keep suggestions coming as I,am getting
Android Auto uses the USB cable to connect to the car, and if the Bluetooth connects first, I think it ignores the Android Auto connection (at least it appears so in my Superb). Alternatively, uninstall Android Auto from your phone, ensure 4G is on, and plug phone into car, it should want to download Android Auto at that point.

Thanks all. Seem to have got it sorted. Transpired the code I needed was the full 16 digits appearing on the maxidot. It was a superb related post on here which gave me the clue to use all the numbers, not just one of the groupings. That appears to have done the trick and the car now recognises the phone and has the phone book installed.
